The CCTV Tower (not to be confused with the CCTV Building) was built in 1992 and is the tallest structure in Beijing. Its antenna reaches 405 metres into the sky, though the observation deck is located at a mere 238 metres.
The CCTV Tower is still functional; it contains broadcasting equipment, though such areas are not for the public.
The CCTV Tower is located in the Haidian District which is to the west of the city a little awkward to reach from the usual hotel areas. Take a taxi or take a metro to Gongzhufen station on Line 1.
A visit to the Observation Deck is a great experience with fantastic views out over the city as well as other displays on lower levels.
A visit in the late afternoon or evening can be combined with a buffet dinner which, though pricey, is a wonderful experience.
Please note: For security reasons bags cannot be taken up the tower. These must be left at the ticket office kiosk. Do not forget to collect these again before leaving.

Yes - cameras are OK tho' we didn't try a tripod or a bag with multiple lenses. These are probably not permissible

Hopefully the baggage security restrictions will allow personal items such as cameras and binoculars.
