The Canton Tower (aka Guangzhou TV Tower and Guangzhou Sightseeing Tower) is now the world's tallest TV tower. With a high-point 610 metres above the ground this easily beats Toronto's CN Tower at just 535 metres.
The design for the project was thrown open as an international competition. This was won by Dutch architects back in 2004 and then developed into the tower that opened to the public on 1 October, 2010. Several of the features are yet to be completed but these should all be fully functional some time in 2011.
The features that will attract the most attention once the Canton Tower is fully open are the:
There will be observation decks on three floors: the 32nd Floor at 162m, the 66th Floor at 339m and the 84th Floor at 433m (figures given as metres above the ground). There will be a number of ticket options and these will limit the decks that may be visited.
The design of the tower gives it a natural 'waist'. A section of this has been turned into an open-air walkway such that visitors can climb the tower on the outside.
The Canton Tower contains a Revolving Restaurant so that diners can get a panoramic view of Guangzhou. This will probably be most popular after dark though the price of a buffet meal, approximately 700 CNY, is perhaps beyond most budgets.
Please note: When we last checked this was still not open.
The tower will contain an ultra-modern cinema fully equipped to deliver movies with that extra dimension - dynamic effects for the viewer. The number of movies with 4D effects is still limited but sure to grow.
There are various exhibition halls throughout the tower and there will be several displays to keep visitors interested at any time.
The following China holiday includes a visit to the Canton Tower:
