Chengdu's history has recently been re-written with the discovery of ancient and mysterious relics of the Shu Kingdom. Certainly it has been an important political and cultural centre for much of the last 2500 years. Great thanks for the agricultural fertility go to Li Bing the governor who introduced an irrigation project at Dujiangyan that saved the city from devastating floods and provided water across the Chengdu Plain in one masterful stroke.
Chengdu (Airport code: CTU) is well served by domestic flight connections and is developing a network of international ones.
Although the Chengdu Plain lies within a bowl of mountains great efforts in the past have paid off and the city is now well connected by both rail and road although these are largely confined to the south and north-east.
The visitor to Chengdu has plenty to choose from in the way of sites both within the city and in the surrounding area. They will also have the opportunity to try Sichuan-style (Szechuan-style) food as it should be: spicy yet fresh and full of flavour. It is also worth looking out for the opportunity to take tea in one of the traditional tea-houses that are so much part of the local way of life.
The 'Changing Faces' routine of Sichuan Opera has become very famous. The local variety performance includes a demonstration of this art as well as many other very entertaining sketches.

No. The Giant Panda Breeding Centre above is a tourist site and, though they do much in the way of research there, does not accept volunteers.
Most volunteers now go to Bifengxia Panda Base which is located near the city of Ya'an - about 2 hours from Chengdu. We don't arrange any volunteer trips at present but let us know if you need any help finding a place.
