Beware The Tea-tasting Scam

The FCO travel advice for China has just been updated to warn visitors of the tea-tasting scam which has left some British nationals in distress.

The scam starts with a polite invitation to visit a tea shop and taste the produce. There is usually some story to make the offer seem harmless. On arrival all is normal. It is only when the visitor gets up to leave that they are presented with a large bill. Threats are then used to scare the visitor into paying.

Visitors should be wary of any invitations from strangers in the street, especially where a shop is involved whether a tea shop or any other kind. Assurances received cannot be relied upon.

If you do get caught in a scam do report it to both the local police and to your own consulate. Eventually, action may be taken to stop persistent offenders.
