Hong Kong Islet: A Hidden Gem

For those seeking an escape from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong's more famous districts there is no better option than a day trip to the islet of Tung Ping Chau out to the east of the New Territories.

The only public transport available is a ferry from Ma Liu Shui (near University KCR station) at 09:00, returning at 17:15. This currently costs HKD 90 return. You can also arrange tours to Tung Ping Chau which may use their own private transport.

The islet is only 2 kilometres long but packs plenty of interest. It has amazing rock formations and plenty of wildlife along its coastline. It also abounds in migrant birds, especially in spring.

You should be aware that Tung Ping Chau is part of the Plover Cove Country Park and wildlife is (nominally) protected. You may well see other tourists flouting this.

There are a number of trails and you should be able to reach most parts of the islet in one day.

A number of outlets offer food and drinks so you do not need to take your own - but expect prices to be high.
