Conjunctivitis, often called 'pink eye', is doing the rounds of China. It is uncomfortable and requires treatment but is not a serious threat.
This inflamation of the membranes covering the white of the eye can be caused by many factors. The one prevalent in China now seems to be viral.
Viral conjunctivitis is highly contagious and it is important to wash hands regularly and avoid touching eyes or even the area around the eyes.
In most cases treatment requires eye drops. Proper diagnosis is important though as permanent damage can result from other forms of conjunctivitis.
If you suspect you, or someone in your group, has conjunctivitis whilst in China it would be worth contacting your travel insurance company to see what assistance they can provide.
