Fuzhou is the provincial capital of Fujian Province. It is located on the lower reaches of the Minjiang River and faces out towards Taiwan.
Fuzhou prospered because of its maritime trade, particularly its foreign trade. It was the shift in this, from South-east Asia more towards Japan, that lead Fuzhou to become more important than Quanzhou - which has a far better natural harbour but is less accessible to the rest of the Chinese mainland.
Fuzhou (Airport code: FOC) has good flight connections within China, particularly with the large commercial cities. It also has some important international connections with the commercial cities of Asia.
Fuzhou is not well served by rail as it is somewhat cut-off by mountains inland. It does have a service but the road option is often better.
Fuzhou does not see many western visitors. Many sites here are largely of interest to domestic tourists and overseas Chinese returning 'home' for a look at their ancestral homelands. There are enough historic and scenic sites to fill a day especially as you are likely to be stopped by locals happy to see interest shown in their city.
