Guangxi is home to China's largest ethnic minority - the Zhuang. Of its 49 million population some 16 million belong to this group. The Zhuang have their own language and even their own script. They have a reputation for fierce independence (The Taiping Rebellion started here) though this was harnessed during the Second World War into strong resistance against the Japanese.
Guangxi is often called the Land of Wonders as it contains some most unusual landforms - karst (eroded limestone) and Danxia landforms (flat-topped but steep-sided mountains) to name just two. These form a wonderful backdrop to many of the activities.
Guangxi has a short coastline, which connects with Vietnam to the south-west. The typical crossing point is at Friendship Pass, a point on the main rail line from Nanning to Hanoi.
There is a saying that Guilin has the most beautiful scenery in all of China, and that Yangshuo has the best of that. These two destinations are hugely popular and are easily combined as they are connected by the Li River cruise, a world-famous trip taken by many dignitaries visiting China, including US Presidents.
The rice terraces at Longsheng are becoming a popular excursion from Guilin, and for those with time it is well worth continuing up a little further to the Dong minority village of Chenyang with its amazing architecture.
Some visitors seek out Bama, a county in the west of the Province which has attracted much scientific interest. There are an exceptional number of centenarians here, something like four times the international average. You can go there to find out the secret, or perhaps just to enjoy what must be a fantastic way of life.
More stress-free living can be found down at Beihai on the coast. There are beaches and fishing villages to discover - a rare opportunity in China.
Guangxi offers many opportunities for you to get active. Yangshuo, near Guilin is a well developed tourist destination in an area of outstanding natural beauty. It is easy to arrange bike rides and hikes as well as more adventurous options such as rock-climbing, caving and kayaking. There are white-water rafting options to the north of Guilin.
You do not have to be a geologist to enjoy the natural beauty that has given Guangxi the title Land of Wonders. The scenery throughout the province varies enormously and is therefore ideal for the visiting landscape photographer wanting to produce a diverse portfolio in a short space of time. Even if your interest is less focussed, the amazing scenery adds to virtually every experience and will leave you wishing you had more time to spend here.
