Nanjing means 'southern capital' and at various times throughout the history of China Nanjing has been the political centre of all China. Not only was Nanjing the base for several dynasties but also for the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Revolution and the provisional government of the Republic of China.
Nanjing's strategic importance stems from its location on the southern bank of the Yangtse River as it approaches the Yellow Sea. The city is protected by hills on the other three sides and was further strengthened by city walls now said to be the longest in the world.
The discovery of a skull dating back 600 000 years has given rise to the archaeological name 'Nanjing Man' to rival that of 'Peking Man' from the northern capital.
One interesting legend says that a small golden figure is buried somewhere near to Nanjing - a superstitious attempt to prevent the emergence of another ruler from here. This gives rise to an old nickname - Jinling (Gold Mausoleum).
Nanjing International Airport (Airport code: NKG) has good connections with over 50 cities including Hong Kong, Macau, Bangkok, Singapore and Seoul.
